Hamilton city centre turns into a choose your own adventure zone, with big energy days, indoor escapes, creativity, and plenty of easy wins when you just want to get everyone out of the house and having fun together.
If you have kids who need to move, start with Soccer United at 443 Anglesea Street. Their one hour School Holiday Sessions are now available to book (28 September to 9 October), so you can lock something in that feels active, structured, and genuinely fun. While you’re in Centre Place, Fun Zone can turn a “what should we do now” moment into a full on holiday highlight. You’ve got Ice Age Mini Golf with 18 immersive holes across three themed zones and a glow in the dark experience, Laser Tag with Megazone tech, Escape Rooms with four unique themes and sound inclusive immersive rooms, plus Arcade Machines with tap and play cards and a huge prize selection. For families who love puzzles, teamwork, and a bit of drama, there are great escape options around the city centre too. Confinement Escape Rooms, 6 Sapper Moore-Jones Place is calling if you want an indoor or outdoor adventure you can do together. If your school holiday goal is to help creativity take the lead, you are in luck. Waikato Society of Arts at Artspost, 120 Victoria Street, is running its September School Holiday Programme with experienced tutors, small group sizes, and different activities each day for ages 5 to 12. Sessions run 9am to 12pm, Monday to Friday, and it’s a brilliant option if you want a few mornings that feel calm, confidence building, and hands on. Info is here.
Then there is Sip and Sew at 401 Anglesea Street, with Term 3 school holiday workshops open for booking. Kids (8 to 12) and teens (13 to 16) can choose mornings (9:30am to 12:30pm) or afternoons (12:30pm to 3:30pm), across Week 1 (28 September to 2 October) and Week 2 (5 October to 9 October). Across the centre city, City of Wonder (COW) brings even more to explore from 25 September to 4 October, with a curated art and design week celebrating creative energy through exhibitions, installations, and interactive experiences. For something totally different, GLOtron at Centre Place Hamilton is an indoor wonderland bursting with giant puppets, science, sound effects, and glow in the dark magic. And if you want a full day option where tamariki can create, explore, play, and discover something new every day, Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum and Gallery at 1 Grantham Street is running its Spring School Holidays programme from 28 September to 9 October. Weekdays are 9am to 4.30pm, with activities ranging from print making and musical fun to penguin themed sessions and fabulous fossils.
