For more than 90 years, the Waikato Society of Arts (WSA) has been at the heart of creative life in the region. One of the WSA’s defining strengths is our exhibition programme. Each year they present a dynamic calendar of over 40 free exhibitions. Highlights include:

  • The National Youth Art Awards – A prestigious platform for emerging creatives aged 13–25, giving young people the chance to exhibit professionally and gain recognition for their talent.
  • The New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards (NZPPA) – One of the country’s most significant awards for painters and printmakers, attracting entries from across Aotearoa and judged by leading figures in the art world.
  • Honouring innovation and craftsmanship, the bi-annual Small Sculpture Award showcases outstanding sculptural practice in New Zealand
  • Members’ Exhibitions – Celebrating the creativity and talent within our own community of artists.

These exhibitions don’t just showcase work, they spark conversations, inspire new ideas, and connect people with art in meaningful ways.

Alongside this they run a vibrant and beautiful retail space, open 6 days per week for visitors, tourists and locals to come and enjoy and purchase original artworks in all forms made by artists around Aotearoa.

Established in 1934, they are one of New Zealand’s oldest and most enduring art organisations—dedicated to supporting artists, inspiring audiences, and growing the cultural richness of the Waikato. Whether you’re an emerging creative, a seasoned professional, or simply someone who loves experiencing art, the WSA is a place where you belong.

The Waikato Society of Arts is also a hub for learning. They run an exciting programme of art classes, workshops, and short courses for all ages and abilities. From children exploring creativity for the first time, to adults developing their practice or learning a new skill, our teaching artists bring passion, knowledge, and encouragement to every session. Whether you’re interested in drawing, painting, printmaking, and more, our classes provide a supportive environment where creativity can thrive. For many, these classes are the first step towards a lifelong love of making art. They understand that being an artist is more than just making work, it’s about connection, opportunity, and recognition. That’s why the WSA offers pathways to exhibit, sell, and promote art, while also encouraging professional development. The WSA was founded with a clear vision: to create a space where artists could learn, exhibit, and flourish. Over the decades, our Society has nurtured generations of painters, printmakers, sculptors, photographers, and makers of every kind. Today, they continue that proud tradition—offering a vibrant programme of classes, workshops, and exhibitions that support both established artists and those taking their very first steps.

Through their awards, exhibitions, and collaborations, they provide opportunities for artists to gain visibility, build networks, and reach new audiences. They are committed to amplifying diverse voices and celebrating the stories that art brings into our community.

Their community is diverse and welcoming. They celebrate the broad spectrum of artistic practice—from traditional to contemporary, experimental to craft-based—and they believe art is for everyone.

The WSA is proud of its history, but they are just as excited about the future. They continue to evolve, finding new ways to support creativity in an ever-changing world. From embracing contemporary practices to collaborating with other organisations, they are always looking for fresh opportunities to enrich the cultural fabric of the Waikato.

They are also deeply committed to accessibility. Art should not be an exclusive experience, but something that everyone can enjoy and take part in. That’s why they keep our classes affordable, welcome people of all backgrounds, and strive to create spaces that are open and inclusive.
